The eldest daughter was on the line (“the responsible one” as I call her in my head. If you know, you know)

“Mom, Mom, Mom”

Mom was immediately alarmed; the responsible one was calling from an unknown number & sounded distressed.

“I forgot the keys to the house & we can’t get inside. I’m calling from the neighbour’s house. Can you come right away?”

So much for being responsible, right?

Mom being Mom, immediately picked up her belongings & rushed off to let the manger know she has a family emergency & she needed to leave right away.

There is a bit of a drive, but mom was not panicking. The neighbour is sure to invite them to wait inside the house until the mom arrivers, right? Its winter, not any winter, a Manitoba winter, duh.

Wrong!

Mom gets there and finds the kids sitting on the front steps of the house waiting for her to arrive & unlock the door.
